Description

The Museum is housed in the 1739 residence of Captain Benjamin James. The Shipwreck Room focuses on the grounding of the Etrusco in 1956 and its long term impact on the people of Scituate, the crew of the vessel and all those who were a part of recovering the ship. The Lifesaving Room pays tribute to those who have struggled to rescue shipwreck victims along the beaches and cliffs of Scituate. The Shipbuilding Room recalls the 250 years of building ocean-going vessels along the banks of the North River. The Captain’s Room is filled with antiques from local mariners. The Irish Mossing Room tells the story of the special maritime industry that once flourished along the Scituate shore to harvest and process Irish moss seaweed.
